Clamshell Quilt Guild visit

October 10th, 2008

On Wednesday I was frantically printing patterns, packing for the lecture & workshop, and just running around like a chicken with its head cut-off. I ran out of 24 lb. papper and had to run to (actually I drove the car) Staples so I could complete the patterns. Then I started to work on packaging the supply kits to go with the workshop project and I didn’t have enough Peltex. Needless to say I don’t live in craft world central (maybe business world central) so this was a real problem. Luckily there was a JoAnn’s 1 mile from where I would be speaking so I was once again saved. (I now have a full bolt of it so this should keep me going for awhile.)

By the way, if you happen to go to Joann’s and forget your coupon – think about purchasing the magazine/booklet that Joann puts out. On the back cover are coupons, usually 2 – 50%; 2 – 40% off, and 2 – 30% off coupons. Needless to say, that paying $2.00 (+some cents) was well worth the 50% I saved on the bolt to Peltex. I figure that I came out ahead at least $30.00 head from my visit yesterday (And I still have some coupons left – that I will probably forget and leave at home).

I had a great visit to the Clamshell Quilt Guild. I love sharing The Legacy Lives On – Five Generations of Quilters. At times it amazes me that people actully pay me to do something that I enjoy so much. Then the fun just continued on Thursday when I taught the Hexabag workshop. There were eight wonderful ladies in the workshop. It was a delightful day. They worked hard and we had some good laughs.

On the way home I stopped in Branford, CT and joined Cher Hurney and Jackie Murphy (friends from QPN) for dinner. We went to Cher’s Country Club where we sat at a table that overlooked the water. It was a great dinner, the surroundings were great and the company and conversation was the best.

Now to clean the house – not much fun stuff to share about today (unless I do a reality post).

Another "Easy Does It" Hexabag

October 7th, 2008

In preparation for a workshop that I am teaching this Thursday at Clamshell Quilt Guild I made another “Easy Does It” Hexabag. Now I am working on putting the finishing touches on the pattern.

Pelham Quilters

October 7th, 2008

The Pelham Quilters meet the 1st Monday evening of the month. Renee gave each member a small square of this purple batik with fish on it. The challenge was to make a block using some of that fabric. My block is the sail boat on the top left hand corner. Anyway, Renee took the blocks and set them together, Teri quilted it and I just completd the binding. That uneven edge REALLY added to the amount of binding that was needed.

The Generations Unite

October 6th, 2008

This week-end was the semi-annual general conference for the church. For the women there are two sessions on Saturday and two sessions on Sunday (the men have an additional Preisthood session on Saturday). To keep my hands busy (and to stay awak alot easier) I try and have some handwork to work on. I thought I had lost my bag that had my handwork for The Generations Unite project. (I did not want to think this was possible becaue it contained 3 pieced blocks that had all the embrodiery work completed on and a 4th block that was about 3/4 the way completed. I have looked everywhere to no avail. I am just glad that I had heeded the prompting and taken out the block of my mother’s so it didn’t get lost. This bag also contained my little light I use when I am working in a place that I need more lighting – which I would for the conference sessions because Tom and I go to the church and watch in the chapel. They usually have all the lights out except for a few dim lights – not enough for my nearly 50 year old eyes to work in. On Thursday I order a new Mighty Brite light from Amazon.

At the Saturday morning session (12-2pm our time) I worked on completing a couple of the secondary designs that are being formed when piecing the blocks together.

As I worked on completing this design it was an amazing experience. As my stitches touched my mother’s (who passed away almost 8 years ago) stitches and they worked together to create one design. I really did feel the generations uniting in this project.

Here is a view of the completed secondary design with some of my pieced blocks showing along with my mother’s embrodiery blocks.

Also – time for a happy dance. This morning I moved a box in prepations to take some things to the Salvation Army that Emily doesn’t want anymore and there was my lost bag. I found the blocks that I thought were lost. What a great amount of time I just saved. I can’t wait to finish sewing the top together – but other things HAVE to been done first.

Twlight Series

October 6th, 2008

In April I purchased an I-pod and with the help of my daughters I have discovered the world of audio books. The first couple of books I listened to were in the Harry Potter series and then they suggested the Twilight series and I have been very obsessed. It has taken me a while to really get it right with copying the cds to my I-pod. With Twlight I missed copying one of the cds. When I told Emily where I was in the book she said it was one of the most important parts of the book – DON’T SKIP IT. I put it on Hold again and waited, and waited until I was able to check it out from the Library again. Once I received it I was on my merry way. I also got to the top of list for the 3rd and 4th books from the series, but was still waiting for the 2nd book in the series

The secenery pictures are from our visit to Alaska. Reminds me of how the country side was described in Twlight. Finally, the 2nd book arrived at the library just before Emily and Jennie returned home. So I waited for a couple of days to start listening to New Moon. On Sept. 25 I took Autumn down to Delaware to met up with her Grandpa from Maryalnd. I wasn’t going to listen on the way down, but she became absorded in movies on the mini DVD player, so I decided that I could start listeningt to New Moon. Having this book made it alot easier to dropped her off with her Grandpa. I just kept listening and listening the rest of that day and all day Friday. In fact, when we got home from working in the Manhattan temple and went to bed I just kept thinking about the book. I was almost finished so I got up and finished listening to the book.
At the beginning of the week I started listening to the next book in the series. I think Tom is beginning to think that the ear pieces are attached to my head and don’t come off. (But, I do make sure to take them off when I go to bed.) I finsihed Eclipse during the week and decided that I should wait until Monday (today) to start listening to the 4th book.

But………… I also thought that I should get it on my I-pod so I would be ready to start listening on Monday morning. As I was copying the CDs to my I-tunes library I gave into the temptation to see how the book starts and you guessed it, I just kept listening and listening. I have a couple of chapters to listen to this morning and will be all done.
So, Tom just left for work so I am off to listen to the end of Breaking Dawn.

Sneak peak

October 2nd, 2008

Here is a sneak peak of the back of my challenge quilt. Today I have been taking the paper off the border. And……..I am reminded of why I DON’T like paper piecing.

Tied baby quilts

October 1st, 2008

Today I bound (by machine) the two baby quilts that the Young Women have been working on the past two weeks at our Wednesday night activity. Each quilt has the same flannel on the front and a different color of flannel on the back. Also the ties are different colors. My granddaughters love the tied quilts that I made for them when they were born. After washing these quilts some of the ties look like they are having a bad hair day, but they still look cute. Can’t wait to see you Baby X and Baby A. (I hope their mother isn’t reading this – think that might ruin the surprise!)

Work on my VSQ Challenge quilt continues but I am not at liberty to share the pictures as of yet. I have the post in draft form and it will post on Oct. 14. I think that I am almost done with the top and will be ready to start quilting soon. It is only 25″ square so I think it might get lost on George.

Backing for Back to School quilt

September 30th, 2008

While the girls were here I quilted Emily’s quilt and helped Jennie draft and started to construct her writing dress. I also did put together the backing for my Back to School quilt. I put the comleted date as Sept. 2008, but I think there is going to have to be alittle creative licence for this date. Here it is the last day of the month and I have yet to start quilting it. I have been working on my challenge quilt for the VSQ challenge. Check back on Oct. 14 to see the progrss and completed pictures.

Autumn working on her pillow

September 30th, 2008
During my sewing classes Autumn wanted to work on a pillow that she had started on a previous visit to Grandma’s.

She did excellent sewing this visit.

NYC with Autumn

September 30th, 2008

On the way home from taking Emily and Prairie to the airport Emily saw the skyline of New York City. We was pretty excited about the tall buildings and said that we should go in everyone of the tall buildings. So, a couple of days later I decided that we needed to take a trip down to the Empire State Building. Here we are just before getting on the train to the city.
Autumn was so fun at the top. She loved seeing all the tall buildings and the tiny cars.

One of her favorite things was the pigeons.

Here is Autumn’s keepsake from visitng the Empire State Bulding.
