Day 3

Thursday, June 5th, 2008
My accomplishment yesterday was that I consolidated these two boxes of novelty prints into the one box (which is still kind of bulging). The basement is getting really exciting. Today it started to look like a REAL finished room. The workers started to hang the sheet rock.

Like any job there are a couple of little problems to be worked out.
But the major problem is the height of the heat vents. Before they started work they were right at 5″10″. Tom is that height and he could just barely walk under them . During the construction the vents have sagged and now they are at 5″7′”, now it seems low for me also. So, this has got to be taken care of. When we were talking to the contractor he said that he would try and get us a little MORE space, not loose 3″. So, that is what I need to deal with this morning. I did talk to the workers about this yesterday during the day and they said okay. They speak Spanish and I am not sure if they understand what I am saying or they just shake their heads and go on doing what they are doing.

In case you have forgotten, here is a picture that shows what the ceiling looked like without sheet rock and now with sheet rock. Way COOL!
Until tommorow!

Day 2

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008
This is a picture of how they are boxing in the pipes over the washer and dryer. When I looked at this it reminded me of how my dad built the walls in the kitchen for the upper cabinets. Then I thought – cabinet, why not have a cabinet for the laundry supplies. Make this corner look alot neater – so they are going to put in shelves w/doors over the dryer. Do you see me smiling?
The electrian came today and started to work with the wiring. We will be putting in new florcent lights that attach to the ceiling. No more dust bunnies hanging out on top of my lights.
We are not going to have the sheetrock go all the way around the duct work for the furance. It is already too low. So. they are going to close in above the duct (vent) and then paint what is still showing white.

More pictures to show the prep work on the ceiling for the sheet rock. I am getting really excited – I am sure that moving ALL the stuff is going to be worth it!

No pictures – but last night I started to try and pare down novelty fabrics that I have. After that the 100% cottons, but I will be keeping all the batiks. Watch e-bay for some great deals!

Siesta time!!!
The wood that is being attached to the ceiling for the sheet rock to screw into.

Ready for the workers to come!

Monday, June 2nd, 2008
Most of the stuff is out of the basement and we are just waiting for the workers to come!

And you wonder where all the stuff went to?
Well……………………………………………..
our living room (and my friend’s garage)!!!!

Prep work

Monday, June 2nd, 2008
We have always had these 2 2x4s on the floor. Tom is working really hard to get them off the floor (because that is what I wanted). Whoever put them in planned on them staying FOREVER. They used HUGE nails!
Tom is prying and prying……………. and success at last.
Once Tom decided that they were coming out – he was not going to give up!

Now he is breaking off the nails because they actually just pulled through the 2×4

instead of being pulled out!

Tom is GREAT (and has alot of patience) figuring out and working with the old wiring. Here he is trying to figure out where this old telephone wire goes (or if it goes anywhere). And… success. Look at how much old wire that he was able to get rid of!

WHY are we doing the basement?????

Out of Control Studio

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

In preparations for the REDO of my studio I have let things get KIND OF out of control. So much for that saying “Everything in its place” — my strategy the past couple of days has just been hoping that “EVERYTHING HAD SOME PLACE!”

Not much sewing again!

Monday, April 14th, 2008

I didn’t get to work on any projects this week but I wanted to share some pictures of how I have been organizing my fabrics. I have been trying to get it all out where I can see it. Batiks on the shelf on the right and woven on the left.

Close-up of the batiks.
Close-up of the wovens.

I had this box of plain colored fabrics. It was in an organge box that I have had for years. It was very depressing when I had to try and find anything in that box. After putting the batik on the shelf from this Rubbermaid box I decided to organize the plain colored fabrics in the Rubbermaid. It was great today during my sewing classes. One of my students was doing a n applique ballet slipper on a pillow. She needed a color for the inside of the slippers, I just went to this box and found just what she needed.

Make me happy to have it organized and fabrics where I can get to them.

The New Door

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

The EXCITING news this week is the NEW door in my studio. The handyman that we hired to do the work came last Wednesday. He and his workers also finished the cement wall outside the door. I love the window. It is so nice have the light down in the basement. One day I went downstairs to get something and as I was going down the stairs I was wondering how the door had gotten opened, then I remember that the light was coming through the window. YAH!!!!!! In the Spring I will do some painting.
I need to do some painting around the frame of the door.

Just to compare, see what the old door looked like.
