Fianl preparations continue

Friday, June 27th, 2008
On Thursday I painted the stairway walls with the second coat of paint. While I had my paint out I decided that this pipe had to be painted.

I think it looks much better!
The Dryer Vent and Washer problems
We talked about changing this dryer vent when we moved into the house, but it’s kind of like – out of site out of mind, so it never got changed.
(Do you think it’s about time to change it?)

I don’t know why we didn’t do that alot sooner. Then, we started to do wash – you will never guess what happened – the washer started leaking. Can you believe it. I guess the old washer was feeling intimated by it’s new surroundings. What to do now, we have to go ahead with installing the carpet because Summer camps start Monday I need my studio set-up for sewing with five kids all day. We have no idea how old the wash/dry are. They were in these house when we moved in.
(I think my mom is looking down on us and thinking that we should have changed to my Maytag washer. My mom was a Maytag lover, she only had eyes for Maytags. Randy – my BIL has the same eyes. He and Susan own a couple of laundromats and they only have Maytags in them.)
Then the leak stopped. We are wondering is this permanent or just for that load? Now we are really wondering what to do.
We worked until 1:00 am getting things moved out of the basement, cleaning up and just doing the last minutes preparations.

I hope I live long enough to enjoy my new studio!

Yesterday I spent most of the day working on the stairway halls. Ever since we moved in (10 years in August) I have wanted to paint the stairway because I thought it would really make things look nicer. My pictures don’t just justice to the before state of this area. You can’t see all the cracks that I had to repair.

The the few pictures were taking during the process of repairing and painting.

The first coat is painted and left to dry. I will put on the second coat this morning. The second coat is always much faster. I also spent alot of time caulking all the gaps last nigth. It is amazing how the prep work makes the finished project look soooooo much nicer. I purchased a little quilt at the live auction. I think I am going to hang it in the stairway. I also painted my last rock wall (for awhile at least, there is one more section that needs to be painted – maybe in 10 years I will do it). This is hard work. Tom and I have been staying up late and working to get ready for the carpet. Last night I was exhausted. He told me to just relax, that I needed a break (and I did!).
Tom painted the perimeters of the floor. The carpet is going to be bound and just laid down. Since the wall is not exactly straight because of the zigs and zags of the rocks we wanted to have the floor painted on the edges so where you saw the cemet floor it would look nice.

I Love Bulk pick-up

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

When I flew home from Columbus my flight was canceled. They rescheduled me on a flight 3 hours later, which also ended up being canceled. I had to spend an extra night in Columbus. Since I have been home I have been working on the basement almost non-stop. The carpet was scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, but we postponed it. They are coming on Friday now. So much to be done and I am exhasted!

Pictures of the walls with the white stuff on them. This process is very slow. The rock wall is hard to paint (seal) because you have to make sure that every little nock and cranny is painted.

I have painted the floor under the washer and dryer.

We removed the carpet last night because Wednesday is Bulk Pick-up day.

There is all our bulk garbage on the side of the road. (I hope they will take everything.)

Day 9

Thursday, June 12th, 2008
Here are the cabinets installed w/o the doors. This morning I installed the door on the left and one big problem, because the ceiling is not level – the door won’t open. That is on the list of things to be fixed today.
Here is a picture of the wall and window ceil that had the big holes – all fixed. Now to paint them white.

The ceiling is coming right along – just some minor electrial work to be completed – like hook-up my 10 florscent lights (did I mention that I like good like to work in?). After I started teaching sewing classes I would rearrange the sewing machines and need a couple of new lights. I would string another extenion cord and be good to go. The new lights should be better placed (and in a straight line).
The outside light –

with it’s switch on the inside. No more stringing the extension cord outside!

This is for Tom, and outdoor plug.

The light over the workbench.
Tommorow this picture should look alot different, there will be a bunch more lights keeping this one light company.

130 yards lighter!!!!!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Yesterday at the annual Trash to Treasure sale at the Village Squares Quilters I took approx. 130 yards of fabric and sold it. It felt great!

This will really help in being able to fit the fabric back into my studio. I want to continue to lighten the load.

Day 8

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008
The PAINTING IS COMPLETE!!!!!!
You are right – this is a RED letter event! I have wanted the ceiling to be all WHITE for years! I am not sure why they left a few of the pipes unpainted, but I can take care of that.

What a difference from 10 years ago. When we moved into this house there were pretty yucky windows in the basement. They had old articles of clothing stuffed around them for insulation. I draped some larger sewing curtians that I had from Maryland just to cover up all the ugly stuff. Then when we decided to put new windows in the upstairs windows we deicded to just go ahead and do the basement windos also. I am really glad that we did that. They look soooooo much nices, but it is also nice to be able to open the windows and get some fresh air. Some time I will have to make a list of all the improvemnets we have made on this house since we have lived here.

*****The STAIRS*****

I hate how the dirt falls below all the stuff on the stiars. It gets really nasty under there. So, I want to close the stairs up. Tom is still not completly convinced about this project. But, his theory is – If I am happy, he is happy. So off to Home Depot we went last night to get the wood to close the stairs up. After looking at one type of wood he said that he didn’t know if he want to spend $50.00 to enclose the stairs, but I said that I did. So, we kept looking and located some other wood that will work just fine (and does not cost as much).

We had Home Depot cut the boards, but they didn’t get them quite short enough, so here is Tom sanding they smaller. But – way to much work, so next time he is going to use the saw.

Water Proofing the Walls
We are going to put the white waterproofing on all the walls, but before you can do that we need to remove the old stuff that has come loose. This part of the wall turned in to a disaster.
Look at the big hole, this will need more than the white stuff to fill this in. It will need the cement patch stuff. This will be tommorow’s project for me.

Day 7

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

The work on the basement continues – they are finishing the sheet rock. Does not look much different and the other pictures – put it will make a big different when they do the painting. On Monday I decided that I needed to do something fun – so I continued to work on the lap quilt for the sewing room. Here is what I have so far. I have decided that the fabric that I was going to use on the border is not right – so it will probably go on the back (maybe). I think that I am going to put a black border on this quilt and then call it quits.

Day 6

Monday, June 9th, 2008
The sheetrock finishers worked on Saturday. They are doing just more finish work. Doesn’t look that much different in the picture. I can’t wait until they start painting the vent pipes WHITE. That is really going to make things look different. Luckily the basement stays fairly cool since we are having a record breaking heatwave. I could not turn on the A/C since a couple of the vent were unattached. Saturday afternoon I got Tom to reattach them so we could turn on the A/C. I love our central air. Sure makes my attitude much better when the hot/humid/heat comes. Tom and I started to get into the action. We are going to put another layer of the white water proofing on the the rock walls. Since we are not sure when they are going to hang the cabinets above the sink, we wanted to get that portion of the wall completed. I did part of it Saturday morning and Tom and I worked on the rest of it later.

A fresh layer of paint always makes things look alot better.
I worked alittle on the quilt that will be put on the recliner. Have all 10 blocks completd with the random colored squres. Now to put it all together. Still trying to decide how to do the border. I many just put the border fabric on the back – it is not singing to my heart in any the combinations that I have put together.

Day 5

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

The electrian has the wire outside waiting for the outlet and light (with a switch inside – no more having to string an extension cord outside and putting a lamp on the ledge). The work on the wall as you go downstais. See where is still looks kind of wet – the plaster was missing in that BIG area!
They have not wired for the outside outlet towards the front of the house – need to remember to ask about that.

Remember what this use to look like?
Pictures of the back hole – not so yucky now and they are not even finished.
NO JUNK ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!!

Full view of the ceiling – I can’t believe how great this is turning out!

They are doing a great job of having the ceiling come together with the wall that was on the stair way. It’s great to have them doing a good job. It seems up to this point that Tom would always have to get involed in some of the finishing to get it to look as nice as I want it to. I remember when we redid the ceiling in the dining area – he had to do this task (ceiling to stairway wall) on that project. Not to mention the work he had to get involved in when we redid the little bathroom. Maybe when things show down on this project I’ll share pictures of that project. Thinking about all these projects makes me realize all the work we have done on our home in the past 10 years!

Day 4

Friday, June 6th, 2008

When we first moved into this house we place a 4′ bookcase in front of this small wall. Last night when Tom and I were down looking at the progress I looked at the bookcase and realized that the wall shows above the bookcase a few inches. Up til now you could not see the unfinished wall because I had so MUCH stuff crammed on the top shelf. With my desire to dejunk some, I wanted the wall to look nice above the bookcase. So, Tom and I moved the book case and I asked the workers if they could also put some sheetrock on this small wall.

This is the corner where the cabinet will be for the laundry supplies. One of the workers just showed me a cabinet as an option – it was BROWN. I am sorry, but with everything else being white, I didn’t want a brown cabinet. So, I am off to Home Depot in a while to see what I can find. (I know- pickie, pickie, pickie!)

The workers were able to raise the furnace vents to 5′ 10 1/2″ – just alittle higher than its original height. What a difference a few inches make. With the work that they had done earlier this week, the vent had slipped down to 5′ 7″, Tom could no way walk under the vent at that height. When I walked under it, it brushed my hair. Now that it has been raised up, it just brushes Tom’s hair.

Just before going to bed last night I just went down and sat in the basement. A while later Tom came and asked if I was dreaming of what it was going to be like when it is all finished. I really am excited. I can’t imagine what it is going to look like with it is all done. The ceiling is looking so much nicer than I ever imagined it could.
