How Do You Do the Coloring?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I have had a few questions about how the coloring on the 3-D Mariner’s Compass was done.

For detailed insturctions see Irene Bluhm’s book – “Quilts of a Different Color”.

Prior to starting the quilting I played around with a draft of the quilting design that  I was planning on using.  By doing this I was able to determine the color placement.  (The draft is approx. 10″ x 10″ – The Quilt is approx. 28″ x 28″).

While doing the quilting, I used tread to match the color that I was planning on coloring that section.  This gives the design a good outline affect.

Ater quilting I blocked the quilt to remove the water sauable markings.  Then I use colored pencils to color the design on the fabric.  When the coloringis complete I will apply a mixture of different textile mediums (receipe in the book) to make the coloring permanent.

Not that hard, but alot of fun.

Quilting the 3-D Mariner’s Compass

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

I have been working on completing this 3-D Mariner’s Compass.

I quilted some feathers around the border.  I didn’t like all the white so I decided to get creative.  Also, the above picture was taken while the quilting was drying after I blocked it.  It is great how blocking a quilt can make is lay so much flatter.

Detail of the border quitling design.  I am planning on using Irena Bluhm’s coloring technique so that is why the thread is colored.

Beginning stage of coloring the feathers

The coloring is progressing.

Little over 1/2 coloring is completed.  One person from my mini group did not think the mariner’s compass and quilting matched.  What do you think?  Trying to decide if I should submit this quilt to a few differnt quilt shows.

Clamshell Quilt Guild visit

Friday, October 10th, 2008

On Wednesday I was frantically printing patterns, packing for the lecture & workshop, and just running around like a chicken with its head cut-off. I ran out of 24 lb. papper and had to run to (actually I drove the car) Staples so I could complete the patterns. Then I started to work on packaging the supply kits to go with the workshop project and I didn’t have enough Peltex. Needless to say I don’t live in craft world central (maybe business world central) so this was a real problem. Luckily there was a JoAnn’s 1 mile from where I would be speaking so I was once again saved. (I now have a full bolt of it so this should keep me going for awhile.)

By the way, if you happen to go to Joann’s and forget your coupon – think about purchasing the magazine/booklet that Joann puts out. On the back cover are coupons, usually 2 – 50%; 2 – 40% off, and 2 – 30% off coupons. Needless to say, that paying $2.00 (+some cents) was well worth the 50% I saved on the bolt to Peltex. I figure that I came out ahead at least $30.00 head from my visit yesterday (And I still have some coupons left – that I will probably forget and leave at home).

I had a great visit to the Clamshell Quilt Guild. I love sharing The Legacy Lives On – Five Generations of Quilters. At times it amazes me that people actully pay me to do something that I enjoy so much. Then the fun just continued on Thursday when I taught the Hexabag workshop. There were eight wonderful ladies in the workshop. It was a delightful day. They worked hard and we had some good laughs.

On the way home I stopped in Branford, CT and joined Cher Hurney and Jackie Murphy (friends from QPN) for dinner. We went to Cher’s Country Club where we sat at a table that overlooked the water. It was a great dinner, the surroundings were great and the company and conversation was the best.

Now to clean the house – not much fun stuff to share about today (unless I do a reality post).

My Visit to Utah – April 2008

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008
The girls picked me up at the airport in Salt Lake City and our first stop was to JoAnn’s. It great that both daughters like to sew. I think my little granddaughter loves fabric also.
Autumn decorating her flip flops.
Documenting her project – what did we do before digital cameras?
Visit to Aquarium in Salt Lake City area

My grandson – Ty (1 year old in March).
Jelly fish.

My Visit to Cape Code Quilters
I stayed at this Lodge on Thursday evening.
Pictures from the guild’s Show and Tell.
On Block Wonders (fun way to use Stack n’ Whack blocks).

Maybe I’ll whip some of these up for me and the girls (oh yah, be all made an agreement that we were not going to think like that anymore.)
My visit to the water on Friday morning.

Back Home!!!!!

Monday, March 17th, 2008

On Thursday, March 6th I was out at Mineola, NY at a quilt guild presenting “The Legacy Lives On – Five Generations of Quilters”. The next morning I unpacked my suitcases (not usual, I would have probably waited a few days and just left the suitcases hanging around. But when I was in Utah I liked what Emily did, she unpacked everythng right way so it was not hanging over her head.) I am really glad that I did unpack on Friday morning because I realized that I did not have my piece of the double wedding-ring quilt that my Great-grandmother had made. I was wondering if I was going to have to change my lecture to Four Generations of quilts. Anyway, I called my contact at the guild and she said she would make some calls. She called about 1 week later and said that she had finally tracked down my quilt piece. A member of the guild was collecting items for a sale the guild was having in a couple of months and while this peices was being passed around she got alittle confused and thought it was for the sale and just put it with all the other stuff that had been for the sale. Anyway, the above pieces arrived home last Friday. I was very glad to have it.

(This my remake of that quilt and below is the information on the quilt label)

The original Double Wedding Ring quilt was made by Hannah Maria Jensen Mortensen for her granddaughter Carma Mortensen Ricks as a wedding gift around 1942. Carma stored her precious quilt on the top shelf of a closet. The quilt was accidentally pushed up against a light bulb and was scorched and burned beyond repair. Years later, for a Young Women’s project, Hillary Landon (Carma’s granddaughter) cut pieces of the quilt and framed them for family members.

In 2002, Mary Anne Ricks Ciccotelli (Carma’s daughter) decided that she wanted to make a reproduction of the original quilt as a tribute to her great-grandmother and mother. To make it as authentic as possible, she collected feedsacks on eBay. Because of knee surgery in 2004 and not being able to get to her sewing machine, she opted to hand-piece the quilt top. During a visit to Idaho in August of that same year, Deanna Ricks Wade, Susan Ricks Landon (Mary Anne’s sisters) and Connie Christensen Andersen (Mary Anne’s childhood friend) helped hand-quilt around the rings of the quilt. Mary Anne took the quilt home to New York to complete the hand-quilting.

Color Wheel Magic Worhsop Preparation

On Saturday, March 15th – National Quilting Day I had the opportunity of teach my Color Wheel Magic workshop. In preparation for the workshop I played around with a couple of more colorwheel variations. I decided to try one with a printed background. What do you think?
I was in the process of redoing my handout (and in preparation for publishing the pattern) so I started to make another color wheel so I could take pictures of the different steps.
Here are 11 of the 12 quilters who attended the workshop with their color wheels.
They did a GREAT job!
Here is my sample color wheel.
Disappearing Nine-patch Rainbow
On March 4 I got a touch of the flu and didn’t feel like doing the things that I should so I started a new quilt (big surpirse). Anyway, I loved the rainbow quilt that Jennie just made and I wanted to make my version of a rainbow quilt. I decided to use the disappearing 9-patch block. This quilt has been well received and will probably be a workshop that I am going to offer in the future.
Here is the completed top. I guess this is another project on my UFO list (or maybe it is not a UFO until it has been around for a few months).
