I have been working on completing this 3-D Mariner’s Compass.
I quilted some feathers around the border. I didn’t like all the white so I decided to get creative. Also, the above picture was taken while the quilting was drying after I blocked it. It is great how blocking a quilt can make is lay so much flatter.
Detail of the border quitling design. I am planning on using Irena Bluhm’s coloring technique so that is why the thread is colored.
Beginning stage of coloring the feathers
The coloring is progressing.
Little over 1/2 coloring is completed. One person from my mini group did not think the mariner’s compass and quilting matched. What do you think? Trying to decide if I should submit this quilt to a few differnt quilt shows.
Found your site looking for suggestions on quilting a mariners compass block. I LOVE yours!! The colors are beautiful. I hope you entered the quilt in some shows.
I think that it matches just fine! It’s lovely!
Thanks for your comment on my blog. I am glad that you got a chance to see what the final color wheel looked it. I am really pleased by how it turned out and I really enjoyed your class!
With color pencils. See a more detailed answer in my blog post for today (July 19, 2010).
The coloring is done with color pencils and then made permanent with a mixture disclosed in Irena Bluhm’s book – Quilts of a Differnt Color.
Thanks – the wallhanging is about 28″ square.
I think it looks GREAT !!!!!! How do you do the color? Looks like George is keeping you busy with all the quilting.
The quilting is AMAZING! I think the feathers look nice with the Mariner’s Compass.
I think it’s beautiful and am sure others will love it too.
How do you do that coloring. It gives it a whole different look. SUBMIT!
Your quilting is fantastic, Mary Anne! And, the coloring is a good idea. I think it pays to try to enter into some shows. What is the size of the quilt? I need perspective, LOL!
